Jesus instructs his disciples to pray and fast (see Matthew 6:5 and 16).  He expects us as his disciples to pray and fast if we are to be victorious Christians, overcoming the trials and tribulations of this life.  Jesus does not begin his discourse on prayer and fasting with the words "if" you pray and fast, "when" you pray and fast.  Jesus, the prophets and the apostle Paul give us excellent examples of what can be accomplished by prayer and fasting.  This is truly a doctrine of the church and if we want to be successful as his disciples, we must pray and fast as he has instructed us to do.
